From 2014, you will have to take six compulsorypapers in WBCS Main exam. Each of these six Compulsory Papers will have two hundred marks.
Group – A and Group – B candidates will have to sit for the examination in only one optional subject. There will be two papers on this optional subject and each paper will have two hundred marks. – Total Marks 400
Group – C and Group – D candidates do not have to sit for any optional subject.
The syllabus and examination type of six compulsory papers have also been changed.
Paper – I and Paper – II do not have to write essays in the new syllabus. Letter writing and Drafting of Report have been attached in that place. And as before, the Conventional Type will be tested.
Paper – III, Paper – IV, Paper – V and Paper – VI All the questions of these four required papers will be in MCQ pattern and the answers will be written in OMR Sheet.

Paper – III General Studies -1 : (i) Indian History with special emphasis on National Movement and (ii) Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal. – Total Marks 200
Paper – IV General Studies- II: Science and Scientific & Technological advancement, Environment, General knowledge, and Current Affairs. – Total Marks 200
Paper – V The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of Reserve Bank of India. – Total Marks 200.
Paper – VI Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning – Total Marks 200.
English – Letter writing (Within 150 words)/Drafting of Report (within 200 words), Precis Writing, Composition and Translation from Bengali/Hindi/ Urdu/ Nepali/Santali to English.
